Young volunteers sought in Burnham for trading standards checks

-

Volunteers aged between 14 and 16 are being sought in the Burnham-On-Sea area by Somerset County Council’s Trading Standards team to help enforce laws relating to the underage sale of age-restricted products such as cigarettes, alcohol and fireworks.

Test purchases are the most effective way that the Trading Standards team check traders are not illegally selling items.

And young people, working with Trading Standards Officers and police officers, are invited to visit off-licences, pubs and supermarkets to attempt to buy age-restricted goods.

Rigorous Home Office guidelines will be followed to ensure the safety and well-being of the volunteers at all times.

While volunteers are not paid, a meal and refreshments are also provided throughout the day. The work helps towards awards such as the Duke of Edinburgh, or badges for Scouts and Girl Guides.

If your son or daughter, or someone you know, would like to help Trading Standards during the school holidays, weekends or evenings, contact Sharon Cridlin on 01823 357264 or email scridlin@somerset.gov.uk for further details.
