High winds cause disruption in Burnham-On-Sea area

-

Gale force winds caused disruption in the Burnham-On-Sea area during the early hours of this morning (Friday, November 12th).

Berrow Road was partially blocked at midnight, as pictured here, after a large willow tree blew over at the junction with Naish Road.

Police diverted traffic around the scene and Somerset County County Council’s Highways team was called, along with several tree surgeons.

Local resident Barry Popham told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This was the last remaining twisted willow with a preservation order on it next to the building site – the tree surgeons had to dismember it as it was blocking the road. One of the team said that it looked as if the builders digging near to the trees’ root structure may have weakend it.”

Several fences, signs and street lights were also damaged in the Burnham-On-Sea area by the high winds.
