Mean thieves steal 36 metres of lead from Burnham youth centre’s roof

-

Mean thieves have stolen 36 metres of lead sheeting from the roof of Burnham-On-Sea’s youth centre during the latest in a spate of local metal thefts.

The team who run the busy Burnham Area Youth Centre in Cassis Close made the discovery after investigating damp patches in the building.

They found the lead had been stolen from the coping stones around the inner roof.

BAY Centre Vice Chairman Mike Lang told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Is nowhere safe? We work hard to keep this community building available for use by the community, and it appears nowhere is immune from scrap metal theft.”

He added: “Our maintenance volunteers have worked hard all weekend to replace the missing lead with non-valuable roof covering.”

Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact them via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or the new non-emergency number 101.

This latest theft comes during an ongoing fundraising campaign to raise £33,000 to replace the BAY Centre’s roof.
