Burnham-On-Sea tennis club mourns loss of popular players

-

Members of Burnham-On-Sea’s Avenue Tennis Club have this week been remembering two well-known players, who have died.

The club’s President and Acting Chairperson, Pooh Jenkins, announced at the club’s AGM the sad passing of Norman Green (pictured below) on 17th May.

Norman was a past Chairman, Captain, player and a popular long-standing member.

“The club passes on its most sincere condolences to Norman’s family and his friends from all his friends at the Avenue Tennis Club,” said Pooh.

“He was one of the club’s very prominent and active members who had been involved in the running, managing, playing and socialising at the club for a long time,”

Another former player, Jo Gooden, was rememebered on Saturday (May 21st) when the ladies players ran a tournament in her memory.

The event was won by Ladies Captain Lynn O’Dell and Avenue Academy youngster Jess Griffiths. Head Coach Vinny Duddy said he was really pleased that the two had won against some very experienced ladies doubles players.

He added that the win was down to Jess’s hard work in training and to her partners’ steadying influence at important points.

The club’s next tournament will be the preliminary rounds of the Somerset Closed, on 4th and 5th June, when players will compete in a singles and doubles competition. The club invites the public to come and watch the best players in Somerset battle it out to become Somerset Champion.

A junior yellow ball and green ball tournament will also be held on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th May respectively.

A School Holiday Junior Tennis Camp will also be run from Tuesday 31st May until 3rd June from 9am-4pm each day.
