Members of Highbridge’s King Alfred Amateur Boxing Club held their annual presentation night on Saturday (September 15th).

The successful event was attended by over 50 club members and supporters at The Orchard in West Huntspill.

County Councillor John Woodman attended as both a supporter and Chairman of the Community First Highbridge Grants Panel which recently awarded a grant of £1,000 to the club towards the cost of renovating its toilets and purchasing new equipment.

Among those receiving awards was Best Newcomer for Ryan Bromage, Courage Cup for Matthew Watts, Billy Parsons Club for Bradley Dutton and the Performance award for Wayne Hughes.

Best Female was won by Dionne Crisp, the Best Youth award went to Danny Keen, Best Senior was Joe Osgood, Best Prospect was Matthew Watts and the award for the Boxer’s Boxer went to Dionne Crisp.

The club’s Roger Cross told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It’s been a good year for the club. This year we have had three Western Counties Champions – Matthew Watts, Wayne Hughes and Michael Hughes – and two of our boxers have represented the Western Counties team – Dionne Crisp and Wayne Hughes.”

“The club has five CRB checked coaches and this year we have around 15 boxers, three of them girls.”

” We welcome newcomers to our training nights on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6.30pm-8pm. We thank Terry Rickards for continuing to let us use his unit as our training unit next to the Asda supermarket.”
