Workmen repair road in Highbridge... just days after it's resurfaced

Just days after major roadworks finished in Highbridge's Church Street, the county council's contractors shut the road again on Tuesday (May 29th) to make fresh repairs to the newly-laid road surface.

Motorists faced new temporary closures, as pictured here, after it emerged that too much bitumen had been added to the new road surface, making it slippery to vehicles.

Somerset County Council spokeswoman Julia Farrar confirmed to "Following the resurfacing of Church Street there has been concern that too much bitumen was sitting on the surface of the road."

"The contractors have today therefore bought in a specialist machine, at their own cost, to remove the excess bitumen and improve skid resistance on the road. The work went well and further testing will take place to ensure the works have been successful."

Last week, eight days of work to resurface the road were completed. The road led to a now-infamous 47 mile diversion route across Somerset being put in place.
