Future of Burnham-On-Sea clothing shop in doubt as firm folds

The future of a clothing shop on Burnham-On-Sea's High Street has been thrown into question this week after the nationwide clothing chain went into administration.

The notice shown below appeared in the window of Peacocks' Burnham High Street store on Thursday (January 19th) after administrators KPMG were appointed to run the firm.

Customers are being warned that goods bought in the shop prior to the appointment of the administrators will not be refunded or exchanged.

If no new owner is found for the nationwide firm, the administrators may close the shops, leaving the large site in the centre of Burnham town centre vacant.

The administrators of Peacocks made 249 head office staff redundant on Thursday in the first round of job losses.

KPMG said on Thursday that it would continue to run Peacocks' 563 stores - including Burnham's - as it seeks a buyer for the business.

The administrators said that Peacocks' collapse was caused by consumers tightening their belts, while a surplus of stores and high overheads had led to the business becoming "financially unviable in its current form".
