Burnham-On-Sea
Sea Cadets meet silver medal winning Olympian
A
group of Burnham and Highbridge Sea Cadets met one of Britain's
Olympic medalists during a visit to Weymouth last weekend.
The
youngsters were thrilled to meet Team GB's Olympic Sailing team,
including silver medal winner Luke Patience, as pictured, during
their visit to the Olympic Sailing facilities in Weymouth and
Portland.
The
group's Commanding Officer, Lt. Bob Silverthorne, said the thirteen
cadets from Burnham and Highbridge had a "terrific time".
"They
were ferried out into Weymouth Bay and onto HMS Bulwark and were
privileged to meet the whole of the GB Olympic Sailing team."
"The
team was understandably still in jubilant mood," added Bob.
"This was followed by an invite to a mess party on board
with officers and ratings from the ship."
The
cadets stayed onboard HMS Bulwark overnight and were treated to
various activities over the next two days, including their own
opportunity to go boating in the area.
The
weekend was sponsored by the Royal Navy and the cadets therefore
enjoyed the experience at no cost.
Burnham
Sea Cadets' numbers have steadily grown over recent years and
newcomers are still being recruited. The group meets on Monday
evenings for Senior Cadets (aged 12 18) and on Thursdays
for both Seniors and Juniors (Juniors aged 10 12). Come
along or contact kim84@tiscali.co.uk.
