Brean Rally 2013: Thrills and spills on first day as duo aim for fifth win

-

Turbo-charged drivers Peter Lloyd and Carl Sorenson are on course to become the first team to win Brean’s Rally for a fifth consecutive year despite slippery conditions causing thrills and spills on Saturday.

The speedy duo were leading the two-day event in their Subaru Impreza at the end of Saturday’s first day of action at Brean Leisure Park.

They have a lead of 1 minute and 19 seconds over second-placed Steve and Yvonne Furzeland.

“Conditions have been slippery despite bright sunshine and drying surfaces. The conditions have been catching out the unwary with a number of spins taking place,” a spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

Drama occurred early on during the first stage when a Ford Escort, driven by Kev Carr and Brett Wookey, pictured above, lost control on a fast section of the stage and took out a section of metal fencing.

“The crew emerged unscathed, however the car was rather badly damaged and came to a rest in the middle of the road, bringing proceedings to a halt whilst the car was recovered.”

One other notable retirement on Saturday was Martin England and Dawn England who had gearbox problems in the Mitsubishi Evo.

The milder weather drew crowds of spectators and the action continues on Sunday.

A covered seated grandstand and snacks are available in all spectator areas.

Spectators will be admitted to the park over both days for an admission charge of £5 (accompanied children under 12 will be admitted free) and car parking £5. Gates open from 8.30am and the rally will get under way at 10am on Sunday.
