Hovercraft-themed cake wins top spot at Burnham baking contest

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s rescue hovercraft was the inspiration behind this impressive cake which was crowned the winner of The Great Burnham Bake-Off during the town’s popular Food Festival on Saturday.

Cakemaker Sam Pashley, pictured above, won the champion’s trophy after her BARB-themed entry was judged the best iced cake in the show.

More than 30 bakers battled it out for the top spot – with the delicious entries being assessed by BBC Somerset presenter Ben McGrail and local cooks Madeline Francis and Barbara Lewis.

The competition, sponsored by Burnham’s Positive Wealth Creation, also saw prizes awarded to Lorelei Eloise Timhorbury (family baker), Maxine Shattock (best individual baker), Maxine Shattock (best individual bread) and Asta Howard (best individual sugar craft).

The other winners were Hestor Stanwood (best individual tart), Kathy Taylor (best individual un-iced cake), Lorelei Eloise Timhorbury (best family tart), Asta Howard (best family sugar craft) and Venice Winstone (best family un-iced cake).

Judge Ben McGrail told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The entries were of an incredibly high standard and I was really impressed with the creativity shown and the fact that no one entry was the same. It was a delicious event to judge and I am feeling rather full now!”

Big crowds turned out to visit the festival, which was held in several venues across the town centre over the course of seven hours, as featured here.

The next Great Burnham Bake Off will take place this autumn during September’s Burnham-On-Sea’s Food & Drink Festival which will also see home-made pies added to the competition entries.
