World BMX champion Liam to switch on Burnham’s Christmas lights

-

World BMX cycling champion Liam Phillips is to switch on Burnham-On-Sea’s Christmas lights next month.

Burnham Chamber of Trade, which is overseeing the switch-on, said it is delighted that Liam, who was raised in Burnham, will be lighting up the town centre on Saturday November 23rd.

Liam produced a sensational performance to become the BMX world champion in New Zealand in July, as we reported here.

He has been an active member of Burnham BMX Club since the age of four and is a former pupil of Berrow School and Highbridge’s King Alfred School. He represented Great Britain at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2012 London Olympics.

The Christmas lights switch-on on November 23rd will be held during a day of free family entertainment outside the Victoria Hotel in Burnham’s Victoria Street.

An outdoor Christmas market will be held along Victoria Street from 10am, with local choirs and community groups performing festive music from 2pm, leading up to the lights switch-on itself at 4.45pm.

BBC Radio Somerset presenter Emma Britton will also be helping to switch on the lights and the BBC bus will also be in Burnham all day.

“It promises to be a superb event to mark the official start of Burnham’s Christmas season and we are delighted to have both Liam and Emma lined up to light up the town centre,” said a Chamber spokesman.
