Punch and Judy return to Burnham-On-Sea beach after long absence

-

A traditional seaside Punch and Judy show has returned to Burnham-On-Sea this week after an absence of several years.

As first reported by Burnham-On-Sea.com here earlier this year, ‘Professor’ Paul Wheeler secured the concession to set up his seaside show for the tourist season.

His first shows were held on Saturday (April 20th) and attracted crowds of spectators of all ages.

Paul told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The poor weather meant we couldn’t start the shows as planned at Easter but we have had great feedback this weekend and intend to be here now performing 2-3 shows a day on Saturdays and Sundays during the season, weather permitting.”

Paul has previously performed his traditional seaside show on ITV1’s This Morning and on Channel 5’s Paul Merton’s Great Adventures.

Each of his performances lasts around 25 minutes and spectators are invited to make a minimum donation of £1.

Paul’s has been performing on and off since he was aged seven and has been fully employed in the role since 2005. He is also a full member of the Punch & Judy Fellowship and Equity.

Beach concessions at Burnham and Berrow are overseen by Sedgemoor District Council. This year it has offered the concessions on a daily basis to encourage more attractions to the beach, avoiding bad weather.
