Missing weather balloon could be washed up in the Burnham area

Burnham-On-Sea residents are being asked to look out for a weather balloon which may be washed up on beaches in the area.

The balloon was launched from a school in Pontypridd, South Wales earlier this week and has gone missing over the Bristol Channel.

Rhodri Thomas, a physics teacher at Ysgol Gyfun Garth Olwg in Pontypridd, told that the balloon splashed down in the sea just off Clevedon and has not been seen since.

"The balloon was launched as a school project to capture images of the earth from high altitude. It consists of a polystyrene box covered in gold foil with a white parachute attached to the top," he said.

"The box contains two cameras and a GPS phone so we were able to track it. The parachute should also have remnants of the balloon attached to it. The box has a label stating my email and phone number on it."

"Your help will be much appreciated as there are a lot of disappointed pupils here at the moment," he added.

A reward is being offered to anyone who returns the box and parachute.
