Beach clean-up gets underway in Brean and Berrow this weekend

A beach clean-up operation is being held in Brean and Berrow this weekend as part of a nationwide initiative to rid the UK's beaches of litter.

The autumn beach clean is being held at Berrow today (Saturday) and Brean on Sunday with volunteers scouring the sand for litter and dangerous objects.

The Marine Conservation Society has organised the events, which are being supported by Sedgemoor District Council which is providing bags and litter picking equipment.

Saturday's event on Berrow Beach will be held from 2-4pm, meeting on the beach next to the entrance for cars on the beach.

Sunday's event on Brean Beach will take place from 10am-12 noon, starting on the sands opposite the Warren Farm Holiday Centre. Volunteers are welcome.

Tom Bell, MCS Campaigns Manager, says: "Fifty years ago, beach litter hardly existed. Today it’s a serious environmental concern. We created this problem and the solution is in our hands. The event is still open to volunteers. You can help us deliver a vision of what the future could be like for the British seaside if we turned the tide on litter."

"Clean beaches will save the lives of some of our best loved marine wildlife. It'll protect our kids building sand castles. It'll be a joy to people visiting in the late Summer and show the world what the British seaside really looks like beneath its escalating mountain of rubbish."
