investigation is underway into the cause of a fire in Burnham-On-Sea
town centre last night (Sunday) in which firefighters rescued
two people from a block of flats.
Street and John Street were sealed off for three hours while firefighters
and police were at the scene of the blaze in College Street, which
started at 7pm.
fire spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com: "Two fire appliances
from Burnham were initially sent to reports of an alarm sounding
in the property in College Street. On their arrival, crews confirmed
a fire and requested a further three appliances from Bridgwater
and Cheddar, plus Incident Command Units from Street and Yeovil."
fire involved a cupboard in a communal stairwell. The communal
staircase was 70% damaged by smoke. Forced entry was made to three
flats and two persons were rescued by fire service personnel.
Police also attended and the cause of the fire is being investigated."
police spokeswoman added that two men had been treated for smoke
inhalation, with neither requiring hospital treatment. Western
Power and the gas board attended the scene to isolate supplies.
