Firefighters from across the Burnham-On-Sea area spent Bank Holiday Monday tackling a huge grass fire covering almost 20 acres.

Eight crews were called to the blaze at Stock Hill, Priddy, near Cheddar shortly after 2.15pm.

The fire service had received multiple calls from the public reporting the blaze, which was being fanned by high winds.

Fire beaters, compressed air foam, off-road vehicles and brendon pumps were used to bring the fire under control by 4.50pm – more than two and a half hours after the first call.

“Crews confirmed that an area of grass and woodland measuring eight hectares – or almost 20 acres – had been involved,” said a spokesman.

“Many litres of compressed air foam was used to extinguish the fire and our crews continued to damp down the area into the evening. The cause is believed to be accidental.”
