Video & Photos: Burnham-On-Sea battered by gales and high tide

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s seafront got a battering today on Friday when a high tide combined with strong winds.

Waves crashed onto the sea wall, sending plumes of spray onto the seafront, but there was none of the feared flooding.

The Environment Agency closed off roads along Burnham’s Esplanade while the town’s flood gates were also shut as a precaution against potential flooding.

Sedgemoor District Council and volunteers from BARB also distributed hundreds of sandbags to residents, as pictured below.

Burnham also saw a brief 17-second power cut at around 9.30am when a lightning struck a power sub-station.

Further flood warnings are in force for the next few days when more ‘Spring’ tides are due to coincide with further bad weather, especially on Sunday when strong winds are predicted. Read more here.

The Environment Agency says tidal flooding is expected in “numerous locations” due to large waves caused by the gales. For tide times, click here and see our live seafront webcam here.
