Police issue warning after 'suspicious car' approaches girls

Police have been providing reassurance and support in the area following three reports of suspicious incidents involving a vehicle approaching young females.

PCSOs have been visiting local schools delivering advice to students on how to remain safe. They have also visited YMCAs and other community groups.

Sergeant Elaine Linham said: "It’s important that these incidents are reported directly to us so we can investigate the facts. We ask everyone to be considerate when sharing unconfirmed reports on Facebook as rumours can quickly escalate."

"We are continuing to investigate the reports and would reassure the public that are following up all leads."

The vehicle is described as a large black car with blacked-out windows with two men inside.

A teenager was approached in Highbridge town centre this week, according to the latest reports, and there have also been incidents in Bridgwater.

"As a precaution it always good practice to ensure young people stick to the following information. Always tell your parent/carer where you are going and make regular contact with them while you are out and if you are running late – let someone know."

"Agree safety spots - places you can go to if you feel unsafe. Identify trusted neighbours, police stations, or shops that you can go to alert a responsible adult. Don’t separate from your friends and never go with a stranger, accept gifts, or get in their car."

"Never give directions to strangers or lean into their car and stick to well-lit areas and trust your feelings."

"Don’t take risks – if you feel uncomfortable go straight home, or report the incident to someone you trust – a police officer, a teacher or someone you know well. Ensure you know the correct numbers to call 101 to report incidents or 999 in an emergency."
