Plans unveiled for Burnham-On-Sea to become 'cycle-friendly town'

Proposals for Burnham-On-Sea to become a 'cycle-friendly town' have been discussed by town councillors this week in a bid to boost tourism and trade.

Town Centre Manager Bev Milner Simonds unveiled the proposals at a council meeting, saying the scheme would attract more visitors into Burnham.

She said: "I am exploring whether we can promote Burnham-On-Sea as somewhere that is a good base for cycling holidays and also improve the facilities for cyclists visiting the town."

"I know there are some things that are going to be harder to address - like our roads are not wide enough for cycle lanes - but I have seen so many cyclists heading out for what looks like some serious road training."

"All the cycle racks in town seem to be full during the day so I think it is worth exploring further."

A full report on the plans is being prepared for consideration by the council's Town Projects Committee over the coming months.

The proposals have been welcomed by Burnham Chamber of Trade, which says shops and accommodation businesses are set to benefit. "Anything which expands and grows the town's potential visitor numbers is very welcome," said a spokesman.
