Petition launched to save Morrisons store in Burnham from closure

A petition has been launched to try and save Burnham-On-Sea's Morrisons supermarket from closure.

We reported last week that the firm had announced the proposed closure of 11 stores across the UK in a cost-cutting move - with Burnham's seafront store one of those affected.

The new petition to save the store is online here and copies can also be signed at Burnham's tourist information centre and in the store itself.

One of those behind the petition, Gaynor Brown, said: "The closure of this store would have a drastic impact on the town - not only in terms of the loss of many jobs, but also in respect of the loss of a vital shopping anchor point in Burnham. We want Morrisons to re-think this decision and look at the alternatives."

A Morrisons spokesperson told Burnham-On-Sea.com: "We have looked extremely carefully at whether our store in Burnham-On-Sea can be turned around but unfortunately we cannot see a way of making it viable."

"We are therefore proposing its closure. We are consulting with colleagues and unions and we will be discussing how to reduce redundancies and redeploy colleagues around our business."
