Somerset Day will be celebrated with King Alfred theme on May 11th

The date for a day to celebrate all that is great about the county of Somerset has been chosen.

Somerset Day will take place on 11th May, in honour of King Alfred the Great, after residents in the Burnham area joined a public vote to choose the theme.

King Alfred won 51 per cent of the vote, said the organisers from Passion for Somerset.

The result has been welcomed by King Alfred School in Highbridge, who had led the local Somerset Day campaign in the Burnham-On-Sea area to attract votes.

"We are delighted that our school's namesake has been chosen and that the people of Somerset will celebrate the day on May 11th with a King Alfred theme," said a spokesman.

There were three days in the running, each with a special link to the county. The other dates were 19th May in honour of St Dunstan, and 6th July to mark the Battle of Sedgemoor. Sedgemoor came second with 47% of the votes, while St Dunstan came third with 2%.
