Burnham-On-Sea youth centre’s roof ‘urgently needs £5,000 of repairs’

Burnham-On-Sea’s Youth Centre is set to receive thousands of pounds towards the cost of refurbishing its roof.

The BAY Centre has been awarded a £2,500 grant from the Town Council’s Policy and Finance Committee towards the cost of urgent repair work.

“The centre’s upper roof badly needs refurbishment to avoid serious problems in the future with water leaking into the building,” the centre’s Chairman Mike Lang told Monday’s council meeting.

“We’ve been holding off on the work for many years but it’s now becoming urgent. We are also seeking funding from Sedgemoor District Council towards the overall £5,000 costs.”

Cllr John Parkes said: “I do have concerns about the longevity of this building, but it is a great focus for our community and I want to see it open for years to come.”

Cllr Peter Burridge-Clayton added: “It’s a fantastic building that’s superb for our town – I fully support this funding.”

Councillors unanimously backed the grant application for the building, which is currently celebrating is 50th anniversary.

During this week’s meeting, Citizens Advice was earmarked to receive £2,700, Burnham In Bloom £750, Mendip Community Transport £1,000, BOSH Events £1,750, the Vale of Avalon Vintage Vehicle Run £400 and a new dog-themed festival called Sea Dogs received £400. Despite a split council vote, Burnham Food & Drink Festival was recommended to receive £1,800, as reported here.

All the committee’s recommendations are subject to the agreement of the full Town Council at their May meeting.
