Burnham-On-Sea MP airs concerns over Donald Trump’s victory

-

Burnham-On-Sea MP James Heappey has spoken of his concern at the news that Donald Trump has been elected the next President in America.

The MP has expressed his concerns over statements made during Mr Trump’s campaign about NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) and the military ties that unite Britain and the USA.

Mr Heappey told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The American people spoke in the most unexpected way and have elected a President who has said some quite extraordinary things whilst on the campaign trail.”

“However we on this side of the Atlantic might feel about the result, it is the democratically expressed will of the American people that Donald Trump should be their President and he is to be congratulated on an astonishing victory.”

“As an ex-soldier my first concern is on the things he has said about NATO during his campaign for the presidency.”

“The United Kingdom and the United States have enjoyed close military ties for over a century and the American commitment to NATO has been pivotal in maintaining peace within Europe since 1945.”

“I hope that as the reality of the Oval Office comes more sharply into focus for Mr Trump, that he will re-think his views on NATO and the role of the United States in defending freedom and democracy around the globe.”

“If America under his leadership pulls up the drawbridge, the world will be a more dangerous place.”
