Burnham man's petition calls for tougher police action on phone drivers

A Burnham-On-Sea resident has launched a petition calling on the Government to take tougher action against motorists who use mobile phones while driving.

Ken May, pictured, wants Police to be given new powers to seize and destroy phones if drivers are caught using them.

His petition has been published on the official Parliament website here and he hopes that enough people will sign for Parliament to debate it.

Ken told "The only deterrent to using a hand-held mobile phone whilst driving is the remote possibility of being caught and then being given a fixed penalty fine of 3 points and £100 fine."

"That is totally insignificant in today's world."

"The using of a mobile whilst driving is an extreme distraction. I'm absolutely certain such legislation would have a significant deterrent effect."

"So many people are killed or injured every week as a result of road traffic accidents where mobile phone distraction is the cause. Please sign & support this petition. You will be saving lives!"

He added: "It took decades for the drink driving problem to be adequately addressed but that legislation has really worked."
