Stranded dog and owner rescued by Burnham-On-Sea hovercraft

Burnham-On-Sea's rescue hovercraft flew out to rescue a stranded dog and its owner from mud at Uphill on Thursday (July 20th).

Weston and Clevedon Coastguards were called out alongside a crew from Burnham's BARB Search & Rescue at mid-day to reports of the dog walker attempting to rescue the pet from thick mud by Black Rock.

"The hovercraft initially flew out to the owner and brought him back to the safety of the hard sand," said a BARB spokesman.

"Once the owner was safe, the crews then concentrated on rescuing the Springer from a particularily dangerous area of mud by the River Axe."

"It was challenging conditions even for our hovercraft at times, given the thick mud and deep gulleys."

"The mud-soaked dog was eventually returned to its very grateful owner."

"The incident was another great example of close team working in difficult conditions."

A spokesman added that dog owners should never put themselves at risk to reach animals, but to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
