Litter concerns raised over plans for new KFC at Sedgemoor Services

Concerns have been raised over litter being discarded around a planned new KFC drive-thru and restaurant at Sedgemoor Services near Burnham-On-Sea.

We first reported in February that KFC plans to build a new drive-thru at Sedgemoor Services near Burnham-On-Sea on the northbound M5 just north of junction 22.

The 263sqm KFC drive-thru would create 10 new local full-time jobs and 10 part-time roles and be built in place of an existing car parking area and unused grass area, if approved by Sedgemoor District Council.

However, East Brent Parish Council has raised several concerns from nearby residents about rubbish being left around the planned site and access road.

The Parish Council has asked KFC: "Prior to the start of the development, there should be a commitment in writing that there will be suitable receptacles for rubbish around the development and including the car park with clear notices encouraging people to use them. These receptacles should be suitable to accommodate recycle materials."

"There should be a further commitment to put in place frequent clearance of all rubbish within the development area - also in Strowlands Lane to its junction with Strowlands, 500 metres south of this junction and north of this junction to the junction with Edingworth Road and east of this junction to White House Lane."

Separately, the Parish Council has also asked KFC to guarantee that "the coded barrier entry from Strowlands Lane should be secured and correctly operated."

Despite the concerns, the council has raised no formal observations against the KFC plans.

Sedgemoor District Council's Economic Development Team has expressed its support for the plans to create new jobs but added that KFC should undertake a commitment to source its labour locally.

Among the other comments on the plans, The Axe Brue Internal Drainage Board has lodged no objections against the plans, despite making a recommendation for the applicant to explain how surface drainage water will be managed.

Highways England has offered no observations on the scheme but the Surveyor at the County Highways Transport Development Group is visiting the site before making a decision.

The fast food chicken firm is seeking full planning permission for a "new drive-thru building and an associated parking area within the existing motorway services."

Burnham-On-Sea.com reported last autumn that Costa Coffee has also been granted permission to build a new Costa Drive drive-thru on the southbound side of the M5 Sedgemoor Services near Burnham-On-Sea in a further boost to jobs and facilities at the services.
