Panic buying in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge clears shop shelves

Panic buying left Tesco, Lidl and Asda stores in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge with empty shelves of some essentials on Thursday.

Bread, milk and soup was being bought in large quantities by residents stocking up ahead of severe weather arriving.

Our photos show the bread shelves at the three stores at 2.30pm in the run-up to the spell of snow arriving.

Gareth Shute at Burnham's Tesco store told "We have seen panic buying today - it's been like the day before Christmas for us."

"Most of our bread was gone mid-morning, and milk has been snapped up too. We are now low on UHT long-life milk."

A spokesman for Asda in Highbridge added: "It's been a very day here because of the snow, much like a whole day's Saturday trade in a few hours. Our packeted bread has gone, and our in-store bakery is trying to keep up with demand."

There was a similar scene at Burnham's Lidl store, which shut its doors at 3pm.
