Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards were called to Brean Down on Friday afternoon (March 16th) amid concern for the safety of a dog owner after his pet was thought to have tumbled down steep cliffs.
A spaniel went missing just before 1pm, prompting the owner to raise the alarm by contacting Coastguards.
Ian Jefferies from Burnham Coastguards told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “There was concern that the dog owner might put his own safety at risk, trying to reach the dog by clambering down the cliffs.”
“We therefore conducted a search of the cliffs and the base of the Down, but no trace of the animal was found. It’s thought that it ran off after a rabbit while being walked along the Down.”
In 2010, the National Trust introduced several new signs on Brean Down – as we reported here – to warn dog owners about the dangers of the steep cliffs following a series of incidents in which dogs were killed.
