A Burnham-On-Sea couple has urged motorists to be more responsible after collecting huge quantities of litter from hedgerows and verges along a busy road in the town.
Hugh and Judith Champion launched a litter pick along Stoddens Lane at the weekend after getting increasingly frustrated at the amount of rubbish thrown from passing vehicles.
“We’re fed up with this beautiful lane being used as a rubbish bin,” Judith, pictured, told Burnham-On-Sea.com. “We all need to take more responsibility to keep our countryside beautiful.”
“We collected four sackfuls of rubbish from the grass verges and hedges in just a 150-yard stretch of Stoddens Lane on Saturday.”
“Most of it comes from passing motorists dumping rubbish from McDonalds, Costa, Bargain Booze and local supermarkets.”
“The number of bottles, cans, coffee cups and crisp packets is simply disgusting – we collected 87 plastic bottles, 84 aluminium cans, and far too many glass bottles, crisp packets, cigarette packets, plastic bags, sweet wrappers to count.”
“But that was nothing compared to our pickings on Sunday up to the railway bridge – we needed a trailer to take it all away,” added Hugh, right.
The couple says Sedgemoor District Council has been “very supportive” and took away all the rubbish they’d collected on Monday and offered to provide litter-picking equipment for any future cleaning.
But Judtih added: “We really shouldn’t have to do this. The problem is getting worse – but is simple to rsolove. Motorists just need to be more responsible and take their waste home with them and dispose of it properly.”
