Second phase of £5.5m Highbridge housing development begins

-

Work on the second phase of a major construction project to build 117 affordable homes in Highbridge has got underway this week.

Councillors and senior staff from Sedgemoor District Council joined bosses from Raglan Housing Association to celebrate the start of construction of the final phase of development at Springfield Road, next to the town’s Asda store.

The work first started in May 2009 when Raglan started building the first 73 units.

The second phase of development is now underway and is scheduled to be completed by December next year, providing a further 44 affordable homes.

The development has been jointly funded by Raglan and the Homes and Communities Agency, who provided £5,475,000, and Sedgemoor District Council, who contributed £100,000 in capital funding.

Speaking at the launch, Sedgemoor District Council’s Chairman, Councillor Gill Slocombe said increasing the supply and availability of affordable homes is a key priority for the council.

She told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The Springfield Road housing project is an important gateway site and is making a positive contribution to the wider Highbridge regeneration jigsaw.”

“The recently completed homes here have offered a lot of people access to a genuinely affordable and decent home. We are delighted to be celebrating the start of construction of these additional homes.”

Richard Stevenson, Raglan’s Director of Development, added: “Raglan enjoys a strong relationship with Sedgemoor District Council and we hope that this continues to enable us to deliver new affordable housing in this area.”

Burnham-On-Sea.com reported here in 2008 that the housing development had been given the go-ahead by local planners despite some local opposition.
