Small earth tremor shakes Highbridge and Burnham-On-Sea area

-

A small earth tremor briefly rattled the Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge area in the early hours of Sunday morning (December 30th).

The British Geological Survey, a group which monitors UK earthquakes, confirmed that a tiny quake measuring 1.3 on the Richter Scale took place at 2.52am.

It occurred at a depth of 7km beneath the earth’s surface and was centred underneath Highbridge, just to the west of Alstone – as shown on the map oin the right.

The last earth tremor in our area was in December 2006 when a small quake measuring 1.6 on the Richter scale occurred under the Bristol Channel, as Burnham-On-Sea.com reported here.

Earlier that same year, in September 2006, a 1.9 tremor also shook the area, as reported here.

Small tremors like these are not unusual in the UK. “There are actually about 200 in this country every year. Most go completely unnoticed by the public because they’re so small,” a British Geological Survey spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
