New
trees herald start of first phase of Burnham town centre upgrade

New
trees have been planted along Burnham-On-Sea's High Street this
week during the first phase of a £186,000 project to give
the town centre an uplift.
Burnham-On-Sea.com
first reported here
last month that a Sedgemoor District Council 'task and finish'
group had approved a list of improvements to smarten up the town
centre and make it more attractive for shoppers, holidaymakers
and residents.
Town
Council Clerk Eileen Shaw told Burnham-On-Sea.com: "The trees
have been introduced over the past few days as part of our overall
town centre improvement project and are intended to help the visual
appearance of the High Street."
The
project will also deliver new seating, lamp posts, paving stones
and signs along the High Street and some side streets, plus other
'cosmetic' changes.
Plans
to make Burnham's Victoria Street one-way are also being discussed
with Somerset County Council as part of the deliverables.
The
money has come from £146,000 of compensation cash from the
South West Regional Development Agency (SWRDA) and £40,000
from Burnham and Highbridge Town Council.
