Financial shortfall hits Burnham-On-Sea's Christmas lights display

Burnham-On-Sea's Christmas lights display could have to be scaled back this year due to a financial shortfall, it has emerged this week.

Burnham Chamber of Trade, which oversees the annual display across the town centre, says it has a funding shortfall.

"The cost of holding the display in Burnham rises each year, with repairs and insurance costs, and that puts a strain on our funds," the Chamber of Trade's treasurer Deryk Monaghan told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

"We would hate to have to scale back the display - the lights are fantastic at generating a festive buzz in Burnham over the Christmas period and also helping to encourage more shoppers into our town," he added.

"We are grateful to the Town Council for providing £3,500 of funding to this year's display, but we need around £5,000 in total to put on the same display as previous years."

The Chamber has appealed for help in securing additional funding.

Burnham's Ritz Cinema has already offered its help by organising a special fundraising screening of the hit comedy film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. It will be held on Monday 27th October at 7pm with tickets, priced at £8, available on 01278 794123.
