Police in new appeal for witnesses to fatal 2am rhyne crash in Mark

Burnham-On-Sea Police have issued a renewed witness appeal following Saturday's collision in the village of Mark where a man died in an upturned car.

27 year-old Rob Goodwin from Highbridge died when the Renault Clio car he was travelling in left The Causeway and ended up submerged in the rhyne.

"Following further enquiries, we now believe the collision happened at around 2am on Saturday morning," said a police spokesman.

"We’re appealing to anyone driving in the area around this time to come forward if they have any information which could help our inquiry."

"If you can help, please call us via the 24-hour Police Enquiry Centre on 101 and quote log number 226 of 30 May."

Police initially received a call from South West Ambulance Service at 5.19am reporting that the car was submerged in the rhyne near the White Horse Inn in Mark.

A second man - also aged 27 - was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He was later released on bail until July while police enquiries into the circumstances of the collision continue.

Scores of tributes have been paid to the popular Highbridge man with bouquets of flowers and messages being laid next to the rhyne, as reported here, along with messages on social networking sites.

The Causeway was shut to allow the investigation into the collision to begin. The car was removed from the Mark Yeo mid-afternoon, allowing the road to re-open.
