2,000 sign petition to save Burnham's Morrisons from closure
2,000 people have signed a petition urging Morrisons to rethink
the proposed closure of its Burnham-On-Sea store.
last month that the firm had announced the proposed closure
of 11 stores across the UK as part of a cost-cutting move - with
Burnham's seafront seafront store among those earmarked to shut.
petition launched to save the store - which is online
here - has been signed by over 460 people while a paper version
being distributed in the town has attracted over 1,600 signatures.
Morrisons spokeswoman told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week that they
would not comment about the petition while the consultation about
the store's proposed closure is ongoing.
Morrisons spokesperson previously said: "We have looked extremely
carefully at whether our store in Burnham-On-Sea can be turned
around but unfortunately we cannot see a way of making it viable."
are therefore proposing its closure. We are consulting with colleagues
and unions and we will be discussing how to reduce redundancies
and redeploy colleagues around our business."
have been leaving messages of support for the store on
the petition page, saying that it is too vital a community
facility to close, meanwhile council discussions are continuing
behind the scenes to find a solution.
