Volunteer thanked for 43 years of selling poppies in Burnham-On-Sea

-

A dedicated fundraiser in Burnham-On-Sea has been presented with an award by the town’s MP to mark her 43 years of selling poppies.

Mavis Martin, 84, received a Poppy Collector’s Merit Badge from MP James Heappey during the launch of this year’s Poppy Appeal for Burnham and Highbridge on Saturday (October 24th).

“Mavis has been so dedicated to helping the Poppy Appeal for more than 40 years,” Ruth Crosby, Acting Chairman of Burnham’s Royal British Legion, told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“She sells poppies for us every day during the whole fortnight leading up to Remembrance Sunday and she even remembers selling her first poppy with her parents aged just five.”

The award presentation was held at the local Poppy Appeal launch in Burnham’s Tesco store on Saturday. Volunteers are now out selling poppies in local supermarkets each day in the run-up to Remembrance Sunday on November 8th when a wreath laying ceremony will be held as usual at the town’s war memorial.

Burnham’s Royal British Legion is still seeking volunterers to sell poppies this year and volunteers can drop in at the Legion HQ in Victoria Street any weekday between 10am-3pm to find out more.
