New 2015 Seaside Award flags raised in Burnham-On-Sea and Berrow

New Seaside Award flags have been raised in Burnham-On-Sea and Berrow this week after both beaches were handed sought-after awards by national campaign group Keep Britain Tidy.

The announcement of the awards came on Wednesday and was welcomed by Sedgemoor District Council, which manages both the beaches.

Its Chairman, Cllr Peter Downing, formally received the award flags during a ceremony held on Burnham seafront on Wednesday, pictured here.

The council's Resorts Manager Graham Newing and Dave Coles, Environmental and Coastal Protection Officer were also there to celebrate the flags being raised.

The Seaside Awards scheme highlights the best beaches across England that achieve the highest standards of facilities and cleanliness.

Sedgemoor District Council spokesperson Sam Taylor said: "Sedgemoor District Council is very proud to have once again received the Seaside Award for both of the beaches that we manage."

"At a time when more and more people are choosing to holiday in the UK, the growth of visitors, alongside residents, enjoying our delightful and dramatic coastline has highlighted not only the demand but the continued importance of presenting and retaining clean, attractive and well-managed beaches."

"Although Seaside Award beaches can often be very different, they are a symbol of quality which guarantee to residents and visitors that the beach is one of the best in the country. Sedgemoor District Council would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the beach team for their excellent work in continuing to manage the beaches effectively."

Ian Jefferies, Business and Tourism Manager at Burnham Tourist Information Centre, added: "This is fantastic news for our area and Sedgemoor District Council does deserve to be praised for the work it has done on trying to keep our beaches clean. This is great publicity."

Keep Britain Tidy’s Seaside Award scheme celebrates the quality and diversity of England’s coastline. Formerly called the Quality Coast Award, the scheme is the nationwide standard for the best beaches across the UK.
