Highbridge War Memorial set to become a 'listed historic building'

Highbridge's War Memorial could soon become a 'listed building of special architectural and historic interest', it has emerged this week.

The government group Historic England is considering formally listing the memorial in Church Street, which could mean that thousands of pounds of extra funding are secured for its upkeep.

A spokesperson for Historic England said: "War memorials are among the most tangile and precious reminders of the sacrifices made by communities during WW1, and the government is committed to seeing all the nation's memorials placed in a good state of repair by 2018. As part of this, Historic England has resolved to greatly increase the number of memorials which are listed."

The body has written to Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge Town Council stating the Highbridge memorial is being considered for a listing.

Highbridge councillor Cllr Janet Keen said this week: "This is very welcome news indeed."

Town Council Clerk Denise Emery added that the listing would potentially enable extra funding to be secured to help maintain the structure.
