War Memorial set to become a 'listed historic building'
War Memorial could soon become a 'listed building of special architectural
and historic interest', it has emerged this week.
government group Historic England is considering formally listing
the memorial in Church Street, which could mean that thousands of
pounds of extra funding are secured for its upkeep.
spokesperson for Historic England said: "War memorials are
among the most tangile and precious reminders of the sacrifices
made by communities during WW1, and the government is committed
to seeing all the nation's memorials placed in a good state of repair
by 2018. As part of this, Historic England has resolved to greatly
increase the number of memorials which are listed."
body has written to Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge Town Council stating
the Highbridge memorial is being considered for a listing.
councillor Cllr Janet Keen said this week: "This is very welcome
Council Clerk Denise Emery added that the listing would potentially
enable extra funding to be secured to help maintain the structure.
The War Memorial in Church Street is at the centre of Highbridge's
Remembrance Day ceremony each November
