The British Geological Survey confirmed here that a small earth tremor measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale occurred at Huntworth near Bridgwater at 10.49pm.

The rumble was felt by residents in Bridgwater, Taunton and by several residents in the Burnham-On-Sea area.

One reader in Highbridge says: “It felt like a heavy truck went past the house.”

A spokesman from BGS said: “We received several reports of the event being felt in several towns and villages in Somerset.”

“Reports described ‘whole house rattled’, ‘physically felt my bed shake’, ‘a low and feint rumble’ and ‘big rumble and house given a definite shove’, indicating an intensity of at least 3 EMS.”

Another resident said: “It was quite brief, but a definite tremor. My milk bottles rattled on the worktop and the whole house shook.”
