Sedgemoor District Councillors have this week given a controversial development of ten new homes near Burnham-On-Sea the go-ahead.
The owner of land next to Alstone Lane and Alstone Gardens in West Huntspill was seeking outline planning permission to build 10 detached dwellings.
Members of Sedgemoor’s development control committee considered the scheme at Tuesday’s meeting following a recent site visit and, despite more than 80 objections from local residents, they voted to approve the scheme.
Residents say they are disappointed by the decision and say they fear the development would cause flooding and traffic issues in the area.
Resident Alastair Murray made a statement in opposition to the scheme during Tuesday’s meeting.
He said: “Flooding is now a major issue, which will certainly increase should any development be allowed before the drainage systems are up dated.”
“Any development should not have a detrimental effect on the present occupants. This application will have. Properties within Alstone are mainly single storey, are most likely to suffer a loss of privacy and overshadowning, with potential loss of light into their properties, by buildings probably totally unsuitable for this immediate area.”
“This site is part of an internationally recognised ancient monument of the Iron Age, and earlier, entitled ‘Lake Settlement Site-Alstone’ which is mentioned in Domesday book as “Alsistune”-meaning ‘old village’.”
“There must be a real justifiable need for this development. We, the residents of Alstone are unable to find one.”
