The heat is on in the search to find Burnham-On-Sea’s baking champion of the year!

The Great Burnham Bake Off will take place as part of Burnham-On-Sea’s Food & Drink Festival on Saturday May 25th.

Entries will be judged by BBC Somerset radio presenter Ben McGrail, pictured right, it was announced this week.

After almost 50 entries last year, the contest has been expanded to include four competitions and professional categories comprising bread, sugar craft, uniced cake and tarts.

Home bakers can enter any of the four competitions as either individual bakers or families. The best individual entries and family entries in each category will go head-to-head in the finals to win the coveted trophies.

Professional bakers can enter in the bread and/or sugar craft competitions and champion baker trophies will be awarded in both competitions.

Ben McGrail said: “I’m delighted to be judging the Great Burnham Bake Off this year. I like both Burnham on Sea and baked goods so it seemed like a good idea! Somerset has a great food history and it’ll be fantastic to see what exciting and tasty treats people can rustle up at the festival.”

Last year’s family class winner The Nicholsons said: “The whole Bake Off is great for community – it’s great to involve all the villages around Burnham. We thoroughly enjoyed it and will be definitely be entering again this year.”

Entry to the competition – sponsored by Burnham’s Positive Wealth Creation – is free. Bring your cakes, tarts and loaves to Burnham’s Somerset Skills & Learning Centre in Princess Street before 2pm on Saturday 25th May. Entry forms are also available from the festival website here.
