Barclays refused permission for ‘ugly’ steel plate over Burnham ATM

-

Plans by Barclays Bank to install an ‘ugly’ steel plate over a former cash machine in Burnham-On-Sea have been given a ‘thumbs-down’ by town councillors this week.

Members of the Town Council’s planning applications committee expressed concern at their meeting on Wednesday evening (October 31st) regarding the “unsightly” steel plate used to cover up the former Barclays ATM in Burnham’s Victoria Street.

The bank closed down on October 19th, as reported here by Burnham-On-Sea.com and the bank has already installed the metal plate over the cash machine on the side of the premises.

Cllr Nick Tolley said: “Why can’t Barclays brick it up properly rather than leaving our town centre with an ugly metal plate on a wall?”

Cllr Peter Clayton agreed: “Sadly the chances of another bank coming in to this location are slim or zero so there’s no reason to install a temporary steel plate. It should be made good with bricks and rendered.”

Cllr Martin Cox added: “This is the third bank in Burnham to close – it’s so sad that another bank has gone. I pray that Lloyd’s continues.”

Councillors voted in favour of objecting against Barclays’ plans, and the final decision rests with Sedgemoor District Council.
