Eight holiday flats planned for former Burnham mental health centre

-

A former mental health centre in Burnham-On-Sea which was controversially shut down and sold by the NHS last year could be turned into a block of holiday apartments by its new owner.

Belmont House in Technical Street, pictured, was closed down last August and sold off by NHS Somerset for just £170,000 in December, prompting claims that tax payers had been ‘short changed’.

Now, Paul Martin Associates, acting on behalf of owner Mr S Singh, has submitted an application to Sedgemoor District Council for Full Planning Permission to convert the building into eight holiday apartments.

The planning application is due to be considered by Sedgemoor’s planning team during March.

The three-storey property is located in the centre of Burnham and covers 380 square metres (4,090 sq ft) with six car parking spaces.

The health care facilities controversially closed in the summer despite a long-running campaign by patients, their families and councillors to save it.

District councillor Joe Leach told Burnham-On-Sea.com last December: “It is very short-sighted of the NHS Somerset Partnership to sell off properties at knock-down prices like this. Once sold, they are lost to the tax payer forever.”
