Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge join nationwide Coronation celebrations

Events are being held in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge today (Saturday) to mark the coronation of King Charles III.

Union Flags have been installed in both Bunham and Highbridge town centres by the Town Council to mark the historic occasion for King Charles III.

Street parties are set to be held in several areas, church bells will be rung, and several special public events are being held over the weekend, as below.

Saturday May 6th

  • Live stream of Coronation service on big screen – Burnham’s Princess Theatre will show the service with free cream teas available to residents and a talk by local historian John Strickland. Places must be booked in advance. Read more details here.
  • Watch the Coronation together – Burnham Community Centre in Berrow Road will also show the Coronation live on its big screen with all the build-up from 9.30am. Tea, Coffee and light refreshments will be available all day.
  • Coronation speech readings – Burnham and Highbridge’s town crier will read the official Coronation Speech at 2pm by the fountain at the top of Burnham’s Abingdon Street, then outside Highbridge Community Centre at 2.45pm on the grass near the Frank Foley statue.
  • Coronation at Burnham’s Ritz Club — The club will be open from 10am and will be serving complimentary scones, cup cakes and sandwiches during the coronation which will be shown on all screens, including the multi-screen.
  • Coronation Crowns Trail in Burnham and Highbridge – Find 30 special crowns in shop windows for a chance to win £50! Organised by Burnham Chamber of Trade, it runs until May 13th. Read more details here.

Sunday May 7th

  • Burnham Coronation Party In The Park – A free live outdoor music event in Burnham-On-Sea’s Manor Gardens from 12.15pm-5pm. Read more details here.
  • Coronation Eucharist – A special service will take place at 10am in Burnham’s St Andrew’s Church to mark the Coronation.
  • Special Service of Holy Communion – 10am at John’s Church in Highbridge, followed by cake and a glass of fizz to toast the King.
  • Highbridge ‘High Tea’ – Highbridge Community Hall will run a free high tea from 3-5pm to celebrate the Coronation. Call Pat on 01278 788134 to book a place.
  • Brent Knoll Church ‘celebration of nature’ – Wildlife trails around the grounds of St Michael’s Church plus displays inside with a nature theme. Read more details here.
  • Town Band Concert – Celebrate the coronation with Burnham and Highbridge Town Band performing this special concert at The Princess at 7pm. Tickets £8 from the theatre. More details here.
  • Coronation BBQ –  To celebrate the Coronation, 1st Huntspill and Highbridge Scout Group is holding a BBQ and Afternoon Tea from 2-5pm at the Scout Hut in Coronation Road, Highbridge. There will be a tombola, tin can alley, Coronation crafts and a chance to make your own S’mores over an open fire.

Monday May 8th (Bank Holiday)

  • Big Picnic – A coronation ‘big picnic’ event will be held at Southwell House and The Rec from 12.30-2.30pm organised by local community group Our Highbridge. Turn up with your picnic!
