88 anglers line Burnham-On-Sea beach for annual fishing competition

-

Dozens of anglers lined Burnham-On-Sea beach to take in part in the annual Burnham Open fishing competition on Sunday (November 18th).

The popular event, organised by Weston Outcasts, saw 88 anglers competing for £600 of prize money – and all the fish caught were carefully returned to the sea.

“We had a great turnout on a perfect sunny winter’s day – and 29 of the 88 anglers caught fish, ranging from thornbacks and eels, to cod and dog fish,” the group’s Chairman, Dan Palmer, told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“This is always a popular competition with our members that takes place every year at this time in Burnham, with the results announced afterwards in the Bay View Cafe.”

“All the fish are weighed on the beach and then returned carefully to the water.”

The winner was Steve Ace, who landed the top cash prize of £300. In second place was Colin Edwards, who won £200, and third place went to Dia Loder who won £100.

The top junior was Louis Brown who won a set of fishing rods and a bucket of sweets.

Dan added that the anglers were concerned that a large group of visiting kite fliers near the low lighthouse had been cutting their plastic kite guide lines and letting them fall into the sea water. He stressed that the anglers are not the cause of any lines washed up this week.
