These were the scenes in Burnham-On-Sea last night (Monday) when a powerful electric storm swept through the area.

The mini-heatwave came to a crashing end as thunder and lightning arrived with heavy downpours of rain.

Numerous flashes of fork and sheet lightning were seen over the town and Bridgwater Bay from 9pm, as pictured here.

It comes after temperatures in the Burnham area peaked at 23.3C (73.9F) on Monday afternoon.

Several lightning bolts crashed into the sea at Brean, as captured here on camera by Kevin Williams.

Reader Alex Turco took this dramatic blast of lightning over Burnham Pavilion at the height of the storm, which lasted around 40 minutes.

Another bolt, seen here from Brean by Kevin Williams, seemed to crash down near Hinkley Point power station across the estuary.
