Motorhomes parking bid rejected by Burnham-On-Sea town councillors

-

Councillors in Burnham-On-Sea have this week given a ‘thumbs down’ to a request for overnight parking by motorhome owners in the town’s car parks.

The Motor Carvanners Club has written to Sedgemoor District Council asking for the rules to be relaxed to allow overnight parking by motorhome users in Burnham’s Pier Street Car Park.

“The car park has some excellent motorhome parking spots which with adequate regulation could be extended to allow overnight parking,” the club’s Trevor Scantlebury said. “This would be a boon during the summer months, allowing motorhome users to spend money without worrying of finding late night parking.”

But town councillors have expressed concerns about increased night-time noise for nearby residents, a lack of facilities and competition with existing caravan parks.

Cllr Louise Parkin told the council’s latest meeting: “We have numerous good caravan parks in the Burnham area that provide overnight motorhome parking. They continuously invest in their facilities and it would be absolutely wrong for us as a council to set ourselves up to compete with them.”

Cllr Peter Burridge-Clayton agreed and added: “Car parks like the one in Pier Street also do not have the same overnight facilities as caravan parks to cater for motor home users. Toilets, showers and waste facilities would be needed.”

The Town Council decided to inform Sedgemoor District Council that it would not support the proposals.
