This iconic 1960s tourism poster promoting Burnham-On-Sea as an ideal holiday destination is expected to sell for more than £1,000 when it’s auctioned this week.
The original poster – which is emblazoned with the words ‘Burnham-On-Sea – The Favourite Family Resort’ – features a busy beach scene with The Esplanade in the background and has been given an estimate of £1,000-£1,500 by experts at a Dorset auctioneer.
The poster was produced for British Railways during the 1960s to encourage visitors to ‘travel by train’ to Highbridge West railway station.
It was designed by poster artist Peter Walbourn, who died in 2002, and measures 102cm x 63cm. It will go on sale at Onslows Auctioneers.
“In the early and middle parts of the 20th century when comparatively few people owned cars, enterprising railway companies commissioned artists to produce eye-catching posters to boost rail travel to resorts like Burnham and this is a prime example,” a local historian told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
In 2007, another original vintage poster promoting the town sold at Christies in London for £660, which was double the estimate.
