Leading medical ethics professor to talk in Burnham-On-Sea

-

The ethics of bodily enhancement will be explored at Burnham-On-Sea Philosophy Group’s monthly meeting this Wednesday (May 2nd), when a leading professor will visit the town.

Professor Ruud ter Meulen, a social scientist and director at the Centre for Ethics in Medicine at Bristol University, will be the speaker at the meeting, starting at 7.30pm in the Community Centre in Berrow Road.

“This is an opportunity to hear someone who is regarded as one of the world’s leading authorities in the field of medical ethics and it should be a fascinating talk,” Burnham Philosophy Group’s Richard Franks told Burnham-On-Sea.com. “Once again, we has secured the services of an absolutely outstanding speaker.”

His topic for the evening will be titled “The Ethics of Bodily Enhancement”. Professor ter Meulen was co-editor of Enhancing Human Capacities, the most comprehensive volume yet on the science and ethics of human enhancement.

He previously directed the Institute for Bioethics at the University of Maastricht for a decade and has had his views on ethical pluralism published in a range of academic journals. He sits on a range of national and international committees in medical ethics and is actively involved in training and consultancy in ethics.

Members of Burnham Philosophy Group will be admitted free, while the cost for non-members is £1.50. All are welcome.
