Speed device installed at accident blackspot in Burnham-On-Sea

-

A new speed reduction device has been temporarily installed at an accident blackspot in Burnham-On-Sea following a long-running safety campaign by concerned residents.

A speed indicator system has been installed in Stoddens Road, close to the sharp bend near the BASC ground where there have been car several accidents in recent years.

Somerset County Council has installed the system to gather information about the speed of vehicles following a request from the Town Council.

The speed indicator device displays the speed of approaching vehicles and records the information in order to assess the need for further action.

Town councillor Ken Smout, who is helping residents with their long-running campaign to increase safety, said this week he welcomes the device.

“The system is not taking photographs of vehicles, but it is recording their speeds which will be very useful in building up an overall picture of the scale of the speeding problem here,” he told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“Anything that encourages traffic to slow down along this fast-moving stretch is good.”

Residents in Stoddens Road, pictured above, have been calling for improved safety measures at the site, as Burnham-On-Sea.com reported earlier this year following an accident in which a car careered off the road in February – one of several accidents in recent years.
